Lifecycle Marketers

When an abandoned checkout flow stops performing, rebuilding the emails is rarely the first thing to do. A broken event, unexpected filter or integration delay can stop otherwise effective messages from reaching eligible customers.

Here are eight checks to make before changing the creative. They apply to Klaviyo-based e-commerce journeys, though the exact setup depends on the store integration and consent requirements.

1. Check whether Started Checkout is arriving

In Klaviyo, an abandoned checkout journey commonly starts from the Started Checkout event. Open a recent test profile and verify that the event appears after a test checkout. If the event never arrives, redesigning the flow email will not help.

2. Distinguish checkout abandonment from add-to-cart abandonment

An Added to Cart event and a Started Checkout event represent different customer actions. Choose the event that matches the intended customer journey. Check the actual integration and metric names rather than assuming both events exist.

3. Audit the Placed Order filter

A normal abandoned checkout flow should exclude people who completed their order after entering the flow. Klaviyo documents a flow-filter pattern equivalent to Placed Order zero times since starting this flow. If the order event or filter is wrong, buyers may receive abandonment emails or genuine abandoners may be skipped.

4. Inspect skipped profiles, not only sent volume

Open the flow analytics and the recipient activity of recent messages. Skips can be correct, such as when the customer completed a purchase. Investigate whether a surge in skips comes from consent or suppression rules, new profile filters, a changed trigger, or integration timing.

5. Confirm the integration’s event timing

Some store integrations sync events with delays. Review how quickly Started Checkout and Placed Order arrive in Klaviyo, particularly before using very short wait steps. Test multiple real checkout paths and payment methods where appropriate.

6. Verify consent and channel eligibility

Whether an abandonment message can legally be sent depends on the type of message, where the customer is located and applicable rules. Confirm the account’s consent handling, suppression status, and regional requirements. Having an email address is not the same as having consent for ongoing marketing.

7. Inspect personalization and product links

Use test events to check dynamic cart content, currency, price, product images, coupon behavior and checkout recovery links. A technically delivered email with incorrect products or broken links is still a failed journey.

8. Evaluate business outcomes, not just email opens

Track completed orders, order value, cancellations, recoveries and exclusions alongside Klaviyo-reported attribution. Attribution is useful for monitoring, but it does not automatically prove incremental revenue.

A practical QA sequence

  • Run a test checkout with a fresh eligible profile.
  • Check whether the correct trigger event arrived.
  • Wait for the configured delay and inspect any skipped reason.
  • Complete a test purchase, then verify later abandonment emails are suppressed.
  • Validate the rendered email, cart contents and recovery links.
  • Document the outcome and rerun after any plugin, checkout or tracking changes.

What to fix first

Fix event tracking and eligibility before rewriting messages. Then improve the content, segmentation and timing based on real customer behavior and order outcomes. Discounts should not be the default solution to every abandonment issue.
